A conversation with former diplomat and Knesset member Ruth Wasserman Lande, held on the morning Israel's new government won its confidence vote.

    Thirteen years in Israel's foreign service, including a posting to the embassy in Cairo from 2003 working on Israeli-Egyptian relations, and two years from 2007 advising President Shimon Peres. She later served as Deputy Director General for International Affairs at the Federation of Local Authorities in Israel, working with Jewish and Arab mayors alike, and founded her own consultancy in 2019. She sat in the 23rd Knesset for Blue and White in early 2021, and returned to the Knesset three days after this conversation, on 16 June 2021, under Israel's Norwegian Law.

The timing was accidental and hard to beat. Wasserman Lande spoke on 13 June 2021 — the day the Knesset voted confidence in the Bennett-Lapid government by 60 to 59, ending twelve consecutive years of Netanyahu premierships, five weeks after eleven days of rocket fire from Gaza.

She was between seats that morning: out of the 23rd Knesset, and three days from returning to the 24th. Before any of it she was a diplomat in Cairo and an adviser to Shimon Peres, which is a useful background for a conversation about what Israel does the day after everything changes.
