    Bassem Eid

    Palestinian human-rights activist and commentator

A Jerusalem-based Palestinian political analyst and human-rights campaigner, born in the Old City under Jordanian rule and raised in UNRWA's Shuafat refugee camp. He was a senior field researcher for B'Tselem, and in 1995, after reporting on abuses by the Palestinian Authority, he was arrested by Arafat's Presidential Guard and held for 25 hours. He founded the Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group the next year, has spent 26 years researching UNRWA, and is an outspoken critic of BDS.

This webinar took on the questions people had been asking since that spring’s fighting between Israel and Hamas. What started it? Would the ceasefire hold? What happens to Hamas, and to Gaza? What are Arab and Jewish neighbors really like in Israel’s cities? What’s the actual history of Sheikh Jarrah? And is BDS bad for Palestinians?

Bassem Eid came at them as a Palestinian who has spent decades documenting human-rights abuses, the Palestinian Authority’s included. That work once got him arrested by Arafat’s own guard. He was blunt about BDS, which he says is run from warm houses abroad. He talked about Palestinians wanting dignity, and about Palestinian schoolbooks that leave Israel off the map.

It was a Sunday afternoon webinar, sponsored by St. Louis Friends of Israel, AIC, and Americans United with Israel.
