    Fleur Hassan-Nahoum

    Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem

Raised in Gibraltar, the daughter of Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan, and a King's College London law graduate who made aliyah in 2001. Appointed Deputy Mayor after the 2018 elections, she holds tourism and foreign relations and is widely described as Jerusalem's de facto foreign minister. She has worked to build relations with Christians and to advocate for Jerusalem's marginalized residents: haredi, immigrant, Ethiopian, and Arab.

Jerusalem had a hard April in 2021. Police put up barriers at Damascus Gate during Ramadan, riots broke out, and there were attacks from Gaza. Americans United with Israel and AIC got the city’s Deputy Mayor, Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, on a Zoom call that Wednesday morning, and Cheryl Dorchinsky interviewed her. Cheryl told her people kept sending messages asking what was going on, and asked her about the videos of the riots.

Hassan-Nahoum gave Mayor Moshe Lion the credit for calming the city down. He met with faith and civic leaders in East Jerusalem. She thought the police were wrong to put up the barriers in the first place, but she put the bigger share of the blame on Hamas for provoking it. She called Lehava, whose march that week had young Israelis chanting against Arabs, an extreme fringe group. And she said the Abraham Accords had changed the whole region. She co-founded the UAE-Israel Business Council, so she has watched that up close.

She also had a message for the Americans listening. Israel needs their support. “Stand up and call yourselves Zionists,” she said.

The conversation runs about 35 minutes.
