    Jeffrey Herf

Distinguished University Professor of History, University of Maryland, College Park

A historian of modern Europe and of antisemitism. His books include *Reactionary Modernism*, *Divided Memory*, *The Jewish Enemy*, *Nazi Propaganda for the Arab World*, *Undeclared Wars with Israel*, and, most recently, *Israel's Moment: International Support and Opposition for Establishing the Jewish State, 1945–1949*.

Jeffrey Herf teaches modern European history at the University of Maryland, College Park, with a focus on Germany since 1914. Two of his books are about Nazi propaganda, one of them the propaganda aimed at the Arab world. His newest, Israel’s Moment, looks at who supported the founding of a Jewish state between 1945 and 1949 and who fought it.

The Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation billed this talk as his research into the forces that opposed the re-establishment of the Jewish state and very nearly blocked it, told from a historian’s angle and including the Nazi links to Arab antisemitism. CAEF pointed people to his June 2022 piece in Tablet on Nazi antisemitism and Islamist hate. It was the third talk in the series on extremism and antisemitism that CAEF ran that August and September, after Alex Joffe on Islamists in North American politics and Maurice Hirsch on the Palestinian Authority.

AIC partnered on several of CAEF’s 2022 web talks and listed this one on its own events page. The recording runs just over an hour.
